Stop Giving More to the Community Than You Give to Yourself
Introduction
As a community organizer, it’s easy to pour your heart into others, often at the expense of your own well-being. At 18, I felt the same pull—to recreate the family I lost, to see my hopes and dreams in others, and to give endlessly. But over time, I learned a hard truth: you can’t uplift a community if your own life isn’t organized.
In this blog, I’ll share why it’s essential to balance giving with self-care, the lessons I’ve learned about spiritual abundance, and the tools you can use to create a thriving, sustainable journey for yourself and your community.
Reflecting on the Journey
In neighborhoods where trust is scarce, building community can feel like battling trauma. For many, the idea of “community” is tied to deep fears of betrayal or hurt. People crave connection but hesitate to open their hearts.
That’s why the foundation of any community starts within—you must first build a relationship with yourself and with God. The fruits of the Spirit—peace, grace, joy, and forgiveness—are the real keys to abundance, far more lasting than the fruits of our labor.
The Lesson of Balance
I’ve learned that giving more to others than I give to myself isn’t sustainable. Some will criticize you for focusing on yourself, while others may judge you for giving too much. But the truth is, God calls us to be abundant in our own lives first.
If this resonates with you, take a moment to pause and reflect:
• Are you organizing your life with the same care you organize the community?
• Are you leaving space for God’s love and peace to guide you?
• Are you feeding yourself with the same grace you offer others?

Conclusion: Building Abundance Together
As time goes by, remember this: God’s love and peace are with you, even when you feel forgotten. Take time to nurture yourself, align with God’s grace, and grow from the inside out. The fruits of your labor will only last as long as you keep working, but the fruits of the Spirit will sustain you forever.
